Genesis was a very successful rock band in the 70s and 80s. Initially beginning as a folk band in the late 60s, Genesis did not find success until they transitioned into a more progressive rock territory in the early 70s and again into a much poppier sound at the end of the decade. While Genesis has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, including four multi-Platinum albums in the US, and won numerous awards, perhaps their most significant contribution to the history of rock music is their role as the launching pad for the wildly successful and overall influential solo careers of vocalist Peter Gabriel and drummer/vocalist Phil Collins.
