One of the most successful franchises owned by Japanese video game company Capcom, Resident Evil is a series of survival games that have found tremendous popularity over time. The games focus on an outbreak of monsters and zombies created by The Umbrella Company. While the first game, released in 1996, took place solely in an overrun mansion, the franchise has expanded into many different styles and genres of games. As of January 2019, the Resident Evil franchise had sold over 90 million units worldwide, making it the most successful game franchise in Capcom history.
